So, what does zero trust actually look like when you're dealing with code that makes its own decisions? It’s not just about "never trust, always verify" for humans; it’s about applying that same ruthlessness to every single line of code and every ai-driven request.

"Zero trust provides a collection of concepts and ideas designed to minimize uncertainty in enforcing accurate, least privilege per-request access decisions," as noted in the NIST Special Publication 800-207 from 2020.

We're talking about micro-segmentation at the task level. Instead of letting an agent access a whole database, you give it just-enough access for that one specific query. A central policy engine needs to be the "brain" that checks the health of the agent and the context of the request before anything happens.

In a finance setting, you might have an autonomous agent doing fraud detection. If that agent suddenly starts trying to export a massive bulk file of customer data—even though it has valid "credentials"—a contextual trust algorithm should flag that as weird behavior and shut it down.

It means when a new bot is created, its identity is automatically set up and then deleted when the bot finishes its job.
  • Passwordless is the only way: Machines shouldn't use passwords. For autonomous agents, "mfa" isn't about a text message; it's about multi-layered cryptographic verification. This usually means combining a workload identity with hardware-bound certificates or attestation.

A 2025 report from Frost & Sullivan points out that identity intelligence is the "operational core" of zta. They're predicting that by 2028, we’ll see decentralized trust fabrics where ai-orchestrated systems handle this stuff autonomously. It sounds like sci-fi, but we're already seeing the foundations being built today.

Just because an agent authenticated at 9:00 AM doesn't mean it’s still "good" at 9:05 AM. In a zero trust setup, we have to assume the agent could get hijacked at any second.

We need to stop thinking about "sessions" as one-and-done events. Instead, we should be looking at continuous verification. If a retail bot that usually checks inventory levels suddenly starts trying to change admin passwords, that's a red flag.

Or take a healthcare bot moving patient records. If the bot's "health score" drops because its underlying container has an unpatched vulnerability, its access should be restricted to non-sensitive data until it's fixed. It’s about being ruthless with trust.

When we talk about "devices" for ai agents, we're usually talking about workloads—containers, kubernetes pods, or serverless functions. You can't just assume a container is safe because it's in your registry.

A big part of this is the software bill of materials (sbom). As noted in the cisa documentation we looked at earlier, knowing exactly what's inside your code—including the ai models and their dependencies—is non-negotiable for a mature zta.

You also need secure sandboxing. If an agent is running untrusted code—like a python script it generated itself to solve a math problem—it needs to stay in a "jail" where it can't touch the underlying host os.

Now, let's talk about the pipes. In a traditional setup, once you're in the network, you're "trusted." In zta, we assume the network is always hostile—even the internal one.

Encryption is the bare minimum here. Every agent-to-agent communication needs to be encrypted, usually with mutual tls (mtls). This ensures that even if someone is sniffing the traffic, they can't see the api keys or sensitive data being passed around.

But the real magic is in granular data access policies. Instead of giving a retail bot access to the "Orders" table, you give it access to a specific api endpoint that only returns one order id at a time. This limits the "blast radius" if the bot gets hijacked.

In the finance world, you might have an ai agent that reconciles invoices. If it suddenly tries to access the payroll database—which it has no business doing—the network layer should drop that packet immediately.

For a healthcare bot moving records between systems, you’d implement DLP (Data Loss Prevention) strategies. If the bot tries to send more than five patient records in a single minute, the system should flag it as an automated exfiltration attempt.

The National Security Agency pointed out in their 2024 report that we should use automated orchestration to enforce these policies at scale. If a bot acts weird, you don't wait for a human to click "block"—the system does it for you.
